finding the right chiropractor for you

How do you find a good chiropractor?

Chiropractic, 20 to 30 years ago, was centered on spinal manipulation to cure back pain and other musculoskeletal issues. The philosophy was that misalignment of the spine was the source of numerous health problems. Sometimes there was tension between chiropractors and the wider medical community. Diagnosis and treatment centered on manual techniques and basic x-rays.

Today modern chiropractors take a broader, more holistic approach while still focusing on the spine as a primary source of pain. Today’s top chiropractors favor an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and treatment. They will also utilize modern technology for diagnosis such as: digital x-rays or MRIs, computerized analysis of posture and movement, and a variety of therapeutic tools such as low-level laser therapy (biomodulation) also known as LLLT.

Today’s best chiropractors will employ numerous therapeutic methods such as physical therapy, myofascial release, ergonomic education, soft-tissue therapy, massage and exercise programs. They won’t hesitate to address stress management, nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Top chiropractors today work in tandem with physical therapists, massage therapists, medical technicians and the medical community. Not every issue of body or mind can be addressed by chiropractic and a strong network of referral partners is important.

What are the questions to ask to find a good chiropractor?

So, how do you find a good chiropractor? A short initial meeting with a chiropractor is critical to determine if his/her philosophy of treatment lines up with your expectations? Is he a traditionalist or a modern chiropractor? Ask him what his approach is. Is it evidence based with a find the cause focus or just focused on spinal manipulation? Ask them about their employees and partners. Does he work with physical therapists, myofascial experts and massage therapists? What technologies do they employ? Digital x-ray, MRI, biomodulation? How do they approach stress-related diagnoses?

Ask them about the circumstances under which he would refer you to a medical specialist. Perhaps ask him to walk you through the diagnosis and treatment of an interesting case he handled.

Most importantly, listen carefully and see if his approach coincides with how you would want to be diagnosed and treated. Is it holistic and evidence based?  After the interview perhaps check and confirm his licensing and degrees. Also, look for google reviews from patients and read what they say.

This should give you a good insight into whether this particular chiropractor is a good fit for you.
